Use a file for user data in a launch configuration?

Is it possible to specify a file for the user data of a launch configuration rather than just a script? In the AWS console, when you launch a new instance, there is a way to specify a file instead of a script for the user data.

My goal is to set up an auto-scaling group where all my configurations are stored in a zip file on S3.

Thanks

Actually, I answered my own question. It's possible to convert the zip file to base64 here: http://www.motobit.com/util/base64-decoder-encoder.asp then paste the resulting text into the user data field and check it as base64 encoded.
