How do I create an email alert for a schedule task failure to backup a EBS volume?

Via Ylastic or via cloudtrail and SNS

    All scheduled task failures are automatically sent to the user by email.

    Are you asking about something different?

    The scheduled task is set to backup a region. eg. Sydney. If a snapshot fails to create on an EC2 instance in Sydney, will I get an email alert? If not, what do I need to configure to receive an email or slack alert for the failed snapshot on that EC2 instance?

    Yes. Any failure on the task will send you an email alert automatically. You dont need to configure anything if its only email, as that is the default. If you want slack, just setup the slack webhook url on the Ylastic settings page, and also enable the checkbox on that page to receive notifications via slack.
