Creating a snapshot for an AWS EC2 instance and restoring from that snapshot
Hi, I need to make a snapshot of one of our AWS instances and have never done it before. Does the instance need to be powered off? Are there any considerations before starting? Is there a written procedure available? I will also need to restore from the snapshot. Are there written procedures on restoring from a snapshot?
Thanks,
Shawn Baswell

Hi Shawn,
Is this an EBS backed instance? You cannot take snapshots of the older style instance store backed instances.
Here is a recent blog post that refers to backing up EBS instances - http://bit.ly/2b2j2ng
Is that the info you are looking for?
thanks
